The search is over and Stony Brook University has a new president! Dr. Samuel Leonard Stanley Jr., M.D. has been selected from a recruitment pool which consisted of strong candidates from the nation’s most highly ranked research universities.

Dr. Stanley received his B.A. in 1976 from the University of Chicago and his M.D. in 1980 from Harvard Medical School. As Vice Chancellor for Research at Washington University, Dr. Stanley is credited with substantially advancing the research enterprise at the institution. He oversees a research portfolio of $548 million, including $391 million in NIH funding. His responsibilities encompass a broad array of activities associated with the management of these extramural research funds, including, but not limited to the full range of matters related to undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, and technology transfer.

“Like many members of the Stony Brook University community, I'm very excited to welcome Dr. Samuel Stanley as our new University President,” said Liliana Naydan, Graduation Student Organization President and a member of the Presidential Search Committee. “The breadth of his interests and his vision for the university distinguished him among other candidates. He's the kind of president Stony Brook needs at this point in its development in order to climb the ranks as a major public research university.”

The search committee interviewed all the candidates and selected candidates to be passed onto the Stony Brook Council. The Stony Brook Council then selected three candidates to pass on to the SUNY Board of Trustees.

“We are extremely pleased and excited that Dr. Stanley will serve as Stony Brook’s next president,” said Richard Nasti, chair of the Stony Brook Council and chair of the Search Committee. “He is a dynamic leader with a proven track record of success at one of the nation’s premier academic institutions. His depth of experience in attracting research funding will benefit Stony Brook tremendously as we climb in the ranks of the major research Association of American Universities.”

AAU is an association of 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.
